Golden Communications Center is the first line of communication between the public and the Golden Police, Fire and EMS field units. The Communications Center is staffed with ten dispatchers and one supervisor. The center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The duty of a dispatcher is to provide the community with timely and accurate police, fire and medical services along with aiding in the safety of the field units. Dispatchers have to prioritize many things at one time. It is essential for the dispatcher to have multitasking skills and a high level of patience. Shift work is also a big part of dispatching. All dispatchers are required to work rotating shifts, which rotate every four months.

In addition to their basic duties, the dispatchers are involved in extra projects and auxiliary assignments. The projects range from assisting in the developing of procedures to aiding in geography updates. The auxiliary assignments include Critical Incident Dispatch, Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Coordinator, Colorado Crime Information Computer (CCIC) Coordinator, and Trainer.

Being an emergency dispatcher is not a career for everyone, but for those that enjoy a work environment full of challenges, it is very rewarding.
