We have completed the bulk of the work as far as concrete is concerned. We still have some concrete work left, but it will not largely impact trail traffic.

*************************************

If you’ve ever walked, biked, jogged or strolled along the Clear Creek Trail, you know it is a pretty popular area. In hopes of relieving some of that congestion, the City is widening the trail in between the Billy Drew Bridge (just west of the Golden Library) up to the Golden RV Park (at the end of 10th Street). The trail will be widened from eight feet to 12 feet wide.

The construction project began in mid-April and was slated to take about two weeks to complete, however, weather has delayed progress. The construction does NOT occur on weekends and the trail should be accessible on weekends as well. When the trail is not available, there will be detours to get you around the area. Using the sidewalk along 10th Street is likely the best alternative to the trail.

If you have any questions regarding the trail widening project, contact Joe Puhr at jpuhr@cityofgolden.net.

In the aftermath of the recent attack in Boston and the disaster in West, Texas, it’s important to be alert to possible charitable fraud.

As unthinkable as it seems, it is not unusual for there to be fraudulent attempts to solicit donations following a mass tragedy such as what is happening in Boston and in Texas.

Charities are exempt from the No-Call List, so consumers may receive calls from telemarketers asking for donations. Email has also become a more popular method of solicitations for charitable contributions. Regardless of how you are contacted, do your homework before you make your giving decisions. Below are tips on making an informed contribution:

Learn what you can about the charity. Ask for written information to be sent to you. The information should contain the company name, address, telephone number, information concerning how the money will be used, and proof that your contribution is tax deductible. If it is not tax deductible, it is not a charity.

If a charity won’t provide the information, or provides only vague answers, you may want to consider supporting another charity.

Verify the information with the Better Business Bureau and the Secretary of State. You can obtain a reliability report from the Better Business Bureau at www.denverbbb.org or 303-758-2100. The Secretary of State can be reached at www.sos.state.co.us under the section called LicensingCenter, or call 303-894- 2200 press 2.

Watch out for similar-sounding names. Fraudulent companies might use a name that sounds very similar to a legitimate charity in order to confuse you and capitalize on the confusion. Be certain that you are donating to your intended charity. Verify all information.

There is information online that can help you make informed decisions. One resource that can help you select a charity you trust is www.charitynavigators.com.

Find out how your money will be spent. Determine what percentage will go to administrative fees and fundraising and how much goes to those in need. The telemarketer must provide you with this information.

Be wary of someone claiming to be with a charity requesting cash, credit card or social security number, or if they ask to send a person directly to your home to obtain the money.

Refuse high-pressure appeals. Colorado law allows consumers three days to cancel your pledge. Cancellation might be hard to do if someone has already come to your home and picked up your check.

For more information or if you have concerns, contact your local police or sheriff’s economic crime unit. In Jefferson County you can contact law enforcement, DA Fraud Hotline at 303-271-6980, or the DA’s Fraud Specialist at 303-271-6931.

GOLDEN, Colo. April 18, 2013 – Fighting fire with a bucket brigade, crafting electric lights, and buying goods from the general store are just a few ways kids are learning valuable lessons from the past at this year’s revamped Hands-on History Summer Day Camp at Golden History Museums.

Children aged 6-11 learn about Colorado and Golden history through five session themes that include movie making, fire fighting, technology, and mining. Using separate groups for ages 6-8 and 9-11 maximizes learning opportunities and enhances the campers’ experiences.

Programs Coordinator Jessica Lira said, “Hands-on History is a great way to keep your kids active, learning and having fun during the summer months.”

Campers find out where the “real” money came from in a supply town like Golden. During the Mine the Miners game, kids must use their money to purchase supplies from an unscrupulous general store owner.

In “Old Time Tech” kids will practice writing skills by penning letters to family and friends, send Morse code messages over a working telegraph machine, and build an electric light. They’ll also see how many phone lines they can handle during the Switchboard Twister game.

Campers will discover how towns transform over time in “Decision Makers” as they build their own community and role-play in different occupations. They’ll compete in a firefighting bucket brigade while learning about Golden’s volunteer fire department and get a tour of the fire station.

Six weeklong sessions will take place from June 10 – August 2 at Clear Creek History Park, located at 11th and Arapahoe Streets, near downtown Golden. The camp is divided into morning sessions (9 a.m. to noon) and afternoon sessions (1 to 4 p.m.), or full days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A week of half-day sessions is $90 for Golden History Museums members, and $100 for non-members. Register online at GoldenHistory.org or by phone at 303-278-3557.

Golden History Museums connects people to the history of Golden, Colorado through innovative exhibits, dynamic programs and historic collections, and strives to foster a sense of place and build community by being the leading source for local history.

Throughout the month of April, residents can compete to find and report the biggest, baddest pothole in the Golden. City workers will attempt to patch the pothole within 48 hours (weather permitting) from the time it is submitted, and the largest one for the week will be declared the winner.

The program will run for five weeks through April. Gifts will be provided by MillerCoors, Goodyear Tire, Christopher Dodge, Golden Auto Clinic, Cool Breeze Automotive, and Performance Plus Auto Care, and prizes will be randomly drawn each week.

You must be a City of Golden resident to enter. To report a pothole, you can either call the City of Golden Public Works Department at 303-384-8151, visit the Public Works Department in person at 1445 10th Street, or submit your information online or using your mobile phone via YourGOV. In addition to the pothole’s location, be sure to leave your name, phone number, and address in case you win the weekly prize.

The City of Golden continues the spring cleanup street sweeping program following an April snowstorm. We ask that vehicles be parked off the street where possible and that you sweep your sidewalks clean of any sand or winter debris into the street prior to us sweeping your area. Signs will be placed at major arterials into each area the day before we sweep that particular area. We will begin in the north area and work to the south.

Street sweeping began on April 8, and it takes approximately 6 days to complete the entire City. Sweeping is performed as weather permits, however, so the recent snowstorm interrupted operations. If you have any questions please call 303-384-8160.

Thank you for your cooperation!
