National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is recognized this year from April 7-13, 2019, and offers an opportunity for communities to come together to honor victims of crime and to promote victims’ rights. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Past. Creating Hope for the Future.”
In Jefferson County, the weeklong remembrance ends with the 26th annual Courage Walk on Saturday, April 13. The walk begins at 10 a.m. with a continental breakfast and registration on the steps of the Jefferson County Courts and Administration building. The walk begins at 11 a.m.
Doves will be released in honor of victims, following a short ceremony at the Courage Garden, which was built to provide a place of respite for crime victims and their families on the courthouse grounds.
The event is family friendly and the one-mile walk is wheelchair accessible. Leashed pets are welcome.
A suggested donation of $10 is recommended, but not required. Proceeds will go to the maintenance of the Courage Garden, training for victim advocate volunteers and to help victims of crimes and other traumatic events in our community.
