A Safe and Successful Downtown

Downtown Golden with lanes blocked off by orange conesA big change in downtown Golden is underway! On Thursday, May 28, Golden City Council voted to block off many of the parking spaces along Washington Avenue and 12th Street to allow for safer and more spread-out pedestrian flow. It also gives businesses the opportunity to apply for a permit to use the space for expanded outdoor dining and shopping.

As of now, most of the parking along Washington Avenue is blocked off, with four spaces still open per block (two spaces on each side of the street) for curbside pickups and short-term parking. Along 12th Street, both east and west of Washington Avenue, you will see similar areas of amenity spaces to allow those businesses the same opportunity for expansion.

Additionally, beginning June 6 and until further notice, Washington Avenue will be completely closed to vehicle traffic every Saturday and Sunday from 11th to 13th streets. These measures will be in place for the near future as a way to help support the economic recovery of our downtown area. Please keep in mind this is an experiment and a very fluid trial. The City is working closely with downtown businesses to evaluate what works and what doesn’t, to help them be successful and help everyone to stay safe during this health crisis.

We encourage you to shop locally and support our retail and restaurant establishments, while also practicing good social distancing and safety measures. To see who’s open, visit www.visitgolden.com. The City supports businesses who choose to require masks, and crowd sizes will be closely monitored throughout this trial.

Information for Businesses Wishing to Participate

If you own a business in downtown Golden and are interested in expanding your business outdoors for more dining and shopping space, you’ll need to apply for a permit. Below is a document with guidelines for applying for the temporary expansion opportunity, as well as a link to the permit application. We have also included a link for signage that you may print and use in your business to require customers to wear face coverings.
