The Golden Police Department will have officers participating in Walk to School Day, interacting with students and parents and ensuring the walk to school is safe and fun for everyone.
Three local schools are participating in Walk to School Day: Free Horizon Montessori, Shelton Elementary, and Mitchell.
Free Horizon Montessori
This event, in which the school has been participating for five years, is a way to celebrate and support safety as parents walk with the kids to school. Participants will gather around 7:45 a.m. at SPOT Bikes, 331 Corporate Circle, and begin walking at 8 a.m.
Shelton Elementary
Shelton will have “walking school buses” of students led by volunteers from 3 different spots in the neighborhood surrounding the school. They will celebrate the event by having school leaders and members of the student wellness team greet the walkers with balloons, handouts, stickers, and fresh fruit. As part of their grant with the City of Golden, they will also be joined by some city officials on a “walk/bike to school” audit that morning to determine the safest routes for kids to utilize. The City of Golden will be printing maps based on the audit.
Mitchell Elementary
Buses will off-load students at the New Loveland Mine Park and the students will walk to school from there. Many students who live in the surrounding neighborhoods walk to school with their parents. All students and parents will be met at the entrance to the school by cheering and cowbell ringing members of a student group promoting “Fuel Up to Play 60,” a national program that empowers youth, schools and communities to stay healthy by improving nutrition and physical activity at school.
