Dr. Jason Glass is officially taking the reins as superintendent of Jeffco Public Schools on July 1. He will be “hittin’ the road” on Monday, July 10 to meet, talk with, and get to know some of the families in Jeffco. As he visits with the community, Dr. Glass has been asking three key questions: What should we keep doing? What should we stop doing? What should we start doing? He is interested in hearing from all facets of our district to help identify priorities to develop a plan to move the district forward and best serve students.

Superintendent Glass be in Golden from 1:30 to 2:30 at the Golden Community Center on July 10. If you’re unable to make that time, however, you go to one of the other locations he is planning to visit that day. The full schedule is as follows:

Before joining Jeffco Public Schools, Dr. Glass served as the superintendent of Eagle County Schools, establishing a vision based on international benchmarking and an accompanying comprehensive strategic plan. He also worked as Iowa’s director of education after being appointed by Governor Terry Branstad, serving as the state’s chief state school officer and leading a successful education reform effort that culminated in landmark legislation signed into law in 2013. Other posts held include senior director of human capital strategy with Battelle for Kids, director of human resources for Eagle County Schools, director of research & assessment for Eagle County Schools, vice president of quality ratings with Qualistar Early Learning, several positions with the Colorado Department of Education, and a university instructor and high school teacher in Kentucky. In December 2016, Dr. Glass was appointed to the National Board for Education Sciences board of directors by President Barack Obama. Dr. Glass holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and two master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky (education and political science). He holds a doctorate in education from Seton Hall University. Dr. Glass just moved to Lakewood, along with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Norah and Chase, who will attend Jeffco Public Schools. In 1989, the Golden City Council created the Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) to support the economic vitality of downtown Golden. When the Golden City Council created GURA, it also adopted an Urban Renewal Plan to provide guidance to GURA. The organization implements urban renewal projects, consistent with community values.

The Economic Development Commission (EDComm) was established by Golden City Council in June of 1999 and consists of eight members. The purpose of the Economic Development Commission is to provide leadership, education, and the tools necessary for the Golden community to optimize appropriate economic opportunities. Their duties include developing a structure and strategy for marketing/promoting the Golden community.

The Economic Development Commission meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Public Works/Planning building located at 1445 10th Street. If a meeting must be rescheduled for some reason, the date will be noted on the Community Calendar.

The Golden City Council meets in Council Chambers in City Hall every second and fourth Thursday at 6:30 p.m., unless rescheduled due to holidays or other events happening in the city.

Sponsored by the Golden Civic Foundation, Golden Summer Jam is fun evening for the whole family featuring performances from several all-ages bands with ties to Golden, including the Skeleton Dolls, Thunder & Rain, and Weatherbee and the Gnarbillys. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

This new summertime event was created with the idea of connecting Golden families and residents, and promoting community involvement while celebrating Golden’s small town, friendly atmosphere.

Tickets to the Golden Summer Jam are $15 for adults and free for children under 18 (admission for up to two children is free per family). Please note that there are a limited number of tickets that can be purchased so be sure to register early.  Each adult ticket comes with a free Colorado Native Pilsner beer thanks to AC Golden’s generous sponsorship.

This is a great opportunity to talk with a representative and residents of the North Neighborhoods, as well as any issue related to the “good of Golden.”

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is a special district entity authorized and directed by state statute to benefit the economic and community vitality of the downtown area. The DDA will also be authorized to provide tax increment economic incentives to eligible redevelopment projects, much like GURA was able to do in the past.

The DDA meets on the third Monday of each month (unless otherwise noted on the calendar) at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was created in 1982 in order to increase community involvement, and to advise Golden City Council and staff on how to best provide safe and comprehensive parks and recreation facilities, programs, and services on behalf of all current and future residents of the City of Golden.

The board consists of seven members and one alternate who serve four-year terms, making suggestions about policies and procedures, fees and charges, acceptance of park land, design of parks, and other projects relating to the Parks and Recreation Department.

The Citizens Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC) was created by the City Manager to advise City staff on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the annual City budget. Participation in CBAC is an opportunity not only to advise on the prioritization of how City tax dollars are spent, but also to advise our policymakers in their decision-making process.

CBAC meets the third Wednesday of each month, March through November, at 7:30 a.m. in the Golden City Hall Council Chambers.

Golden’s Community Sustainability Advisory Board (CSAB) is taking steps to bring a community solar garden to Golden. The first step in the process is for citizens to vote whether to add renewable energy as an allowable land use at the Rooney Road Sports Complex. While no specific solar garden project is under consideration at this time, if voters approve the use of renewable energy at the site, next steps will be to amend the current lease with Jefferson County and look for a favorable project. Join CSAB members for a “Let’s Talk Solar” open house and volunteer recruitment meeting on July 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Golden Community Center. Stop by to learn more about all things solar and the Community Solar Ballot initiative and ways to get involved. Refreshments will be provided. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to fill out the online volunteer recruitment form  or email goldensustainability@cityofgolden.net.
