Pro Bono Day at Jefferson County Court is an opportunity to receive free legal advice. Members of the public will have up to fifteen minutes to speak with an attorney for various areas of law. No registration is required for this service; it is first-come, first-served.

The event will be held in the main atrium of the Jefferson County Courthouse from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The community driven Golden United Housing Task force is advancing actions to improve access to affordable housing for all income levels while preserving Golden’s unique small town character.

All are welcome for this meeting on Thursday, October 24 from 6 to 7:45 p.m. in the Golden Public Library. Ann Norton will lead a discussion about preservation of affordable housing.

Join Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan for the 2019 Mayor’s Community Celebration.

This free event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30 at the Student Center on the Colorado School of Mines campus.

Join the Mayor in recognizing Goldenites who have contributed greatly to making a difference in the community. Following the presentation of the awards, we are pleased to introduce Dr. Martín Carcasson as the evening’s keynote speaker.

Martín Carcasson, Ph.D., is a professor in the Communication Studies department of Colorado State University (CSU), the founder and director of the CSU Center for Public Deliberation (CPD), which was recently awarded a “Civvy” Award in Washington, D.C. as a national example of a best practice in civic collaboration and collective action. Dr. Carcasson’s research focuses on helping local communities address “wicked problems” more productively through improved public communication, community problem solving, and collaborative decision-making. The CPD is a practical, applied extension of his work, and functions as an impartial resource dedicated to enhancing local democracy in Northern Colorado. Dr. Carcasson and the staff train students to serve as impartial facilitators, who then work with local governments, school boards, and community organizations to design, facilitate, and report on innovative projects and events on key community issues.

Dr. Carcasson will talk about how conversations between neighbors, and strong community dedication to deliberate engagement, can result in respectful and collaborative community results.

Staff and architects will present three conceptual renderings, followed by discussion.

The Golden Safety Academy was created to help educate and empower citizens with information and resources that enhance their personal safety and crime prevention. This free academy is held once a month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of every month in the Golden Fire Department. You may attend one, several or all sessions.

The Shelton Elementary 2018-2019 Kindergarten Open House allows parents and future students (Class of 2032) to meet this year’s kindergarten teachers, the Principal and other staff members.

After a brief introduction from the Principal and kindergarten teachers there will be time for questions and answers.

To conclude the evening, there will be staff-guided tour of the school and the opportunity to see kindergarten classrooms.

The full Housing Task Force will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. This will feature a discussion with CSM on how we can work together to address and manage student housing needs.

Following that, the Preserving Existing Housing Subgroup will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to participate in this subgroup.​

All are welcome to both meetings on Tuesday, November 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the “fish bowl” meeting room at the Colorado School of Mines Arthur Lakes Library.

Do you have great ideas about sustainability in Golden? Are you ready to dive in and turn the community’s sustainability ideas into action? If so, mark your calendars for an upcoming sustainability task force meeting.

The Community Sustainability Advisory Board (CSAB) is looking for interested residents, local experts, and community activists to help in the following tasks:

• Identify data and resources needed to determine impacts.
• Review drafts of the 2020 Sustainability Strategic Plan.
• Help campaign for top priorities.

Each task force meeting will focus on one of the three sustainability goal areas : Water, Waste and Energy. Community members are invited to participate in one or more task forces of interest. To participate, simply show up to one of the task force meetings listed below. Refreshments will be provided.

Join the Golden Chamber of Commerce for pancakes with Santa! The event is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Calvary Church, 1320 Arapahoe St. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season with your little ones. Breakfast includes pancakes, orange juice, and coffee. All kids will receive a goody bag as part of the experience.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there to listen to all of those wish lists! There will be Carol singing with Alli Coffey and holiday readings by Golden Children’s Librarian, Emily Vrotsos. Celebrity chefs from the Golden Volunteer Fire Department and Calvary Episcopal Church will cook up the breakfast.

Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.goldenchamber.org. Adults are $10, kids are $5, and children under three are free. No tickets will be sold at the door. A portion of the proceeds from Breakfast with Santa will go to the Golden Fire Foundation and Lunch and Life program for the Colorado School of mines free lunch program. On Saturdays in December, authentic and historic downtown Golden becomes a festive holiday center. Join in the holiday spirit and watch floats, clowns, festive holiday characters, and Santa Claus on the firetruck parade down Washington Avenue. After the parades, head to the downtown area shops and restaurants. Each parade is different, providing the perfect reason to bring the family back to Golden again and again!

The route is down Washington Avenue from 11th to 13th Streets through historic downtown, with lots of activities before and after. The parades are presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Go to www.VisitGolden.com for more information.
