Bicycle-friendly Driver Course @ Golden Community Center

Bicycle Friendly Driver CourseThe City of Golden has partnered with Bicycle Colorado to provide FREE Auto-Friendly Bicyclist and Bicycle Friendly Driver Courses to the Golden Community!

The Bicycle Friendly Driver Course is designed to teach drivers best practices for sharing the road with people who ride bicycles. This course will be held on Tuesday, April 23 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Golden Community Center, located at 1470 10th Street.

The 1.5 hour, interactive class covers the following topics:
– Common causes of crashes between motorists and bicyclists and how to avoid them.
– Legal and illegal behavior for motorists and bicyclists.
– How to navigate on-street bicycle infrastructure while driving a motor vehicle.
– Why sharing the road is the safest option for both motorists and bicyclists.
– What laws and etiquette we teach bicyclists.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a Bicycle-Friendly Driver certificate, a sticker to display on their vehicle, and the option to pledge to be a Bicycle-Friendly Driver!

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day 2019 @ Golden City Hall

National Drug Take Back 2019On Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Golden Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give you the opportunity to get rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. By getting rid of these types of potentially dangerous drugs, you can prevent pill abuse and theft. Bring your pills for disposal (the DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches) to the Golden Police Department at 911 10th St, Golden, CO.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines (flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash) both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Join the Rotary Club of Golden for the 14th annual Ethics in Business Awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Foss Auditorium of the American Mountaineering Center, 710 Tenth St. The Rotary Club will honor two organizations, one for-profit and one non-profit, for their distinguished records in adherence to the highest standards of ethics in business.

A light lunch will be available and admission is free.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

stamp out hunger food driveMay 11, 2019 is the 27th annual Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, when postal workers all over the country collect food from patrons on their routes and deliver those contributions to local community food banks.

To participate, simply put non-perishable food in a sack next to your mailbox in the morning and your donation will be collected and used to help fellow Golden residents in need.

10th Annual Greener Golden Event @ Golden Public Works Building and Community Garden

Greener Golden 2018Join the City of Golden for our Annual Greener Golden celebration to kick-off the growing season on Saturday, May 11 from noon to 3 p.m. at the City of Golden Public Works Administrative building and the Golden Community Garden. Parking is available at 1445 10th St.

  • Pick up your pre-ordered Garden In A Box.
  • Tour the Golden Community Garden and learn about opportunities to participate.
  • Learn about the City’s Sustainability programs, including water conservation and free sprinkler inspections.
  • Find out how to deal with your green waste and how best to divert these materials from the landfill.

Spring Yard Waste Collection Week 2019

Yard Waste Collection DaysCustomers who subscribe to the City of Golden’s trash service through Alpine Waste can participate in the semi-annual spring yard waste collection from May 13 to 17.

Yard waste will be collected by a separate truck on your designated trash collection day and should be placed at or near where your trash is collected by 7 a.m.

Place material in reusable containers of your choice, or in compostable bags available from home improvement stores. Yard waste for this collection is limited to grass clippings, pine needles, leaves, weeds, branches, sawdust, ground and chipped wood. Please see our Yard Waste Collection page for full guidelines on what can and cannot be collected.

Golden Safety Academy @ Golden Fire Department Training Room

Golden Safety Academy PosterThe Golden Safety Academy was created to help educate and empower citizens with information and resources that enhance their personal safety and crime prevention. This free academy is held once a month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of every month in the Golden Fire Department. You may attend one, several or all sessions.
