The tradition continues for the 8^th year in a row, as Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan honors outstanding individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to Golden with the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence. The winners will be awarded at the Mayor’s Community Celebration Tuesday, October 30, 6:30 p.m. at the Mines Campus Student Center at 1620 Maple St. Golden.

This year at the Mayor’s Community Celebration, prepare to be inspired by a man who lived through the worst, and now works to encourage others to make an impact on the people and places around them. At the age of nine, John O’Leary suffered severe burns on 100 percent of his body. No one expected him to survive the first night, but he did. John endured months in a hospital bed, dozens of surgeries, the amputation of all of his fingers, and years of physical therapy. But for him it wasn’t the end, it was just the beginning of his journey. Some call John a survivor but he is much more than that. John O’Leary is a beacon of hope, and he has an important message to share with Golden.

The event is free and all are invited to attend!

Do some early Christmas shopping at the Golden Terrace Village Annual Craft Show on Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Golden Terrace Village Clubhouse, 201 Pinto Street in Golden.

This is a community-wide walk on November 10 that starts in Parfet Park in downtown Golden and ends on the Colorado School of Mines campus on Kafadar Commons in front of the CoorsTek building, where a mental health wellness fair will be held directly following the walk.

The purpose of this walk is to raise awareness about the impact suicide has on the Golden community, promote suicide prevention efforts and conversations, and remember those lost to suicide. Participants will be provided with colored beads to wear that symbolize their connection to this cause. This is a free event open to everyone.

On Veteran’s Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, the City of Golden and Golden History Museum & Park will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I with a day of celebration, programs, and free admission. The Museum opens at 10 a.m. and ceremonies begin at 11 a.m.

The 1968 time capsule that has been buried in the sidewalk next to Golden’s Liberty Bell in front of City Hall for the past 50 years will be opened and its contents unveiled for the public to see at the Golden History Museum, 923 10th St.

The time capsule tradition began in 1918 when Golden residents buried the first one in honor of the end of WWI and asked that the people of 1968 open it. The next generation dutifully opened the capsule and buried another for us to celebrate and experience in 2018. In the same tradition, we will bury a time capsule with items representing our times for the people of 2068 to open.

The Golden Safety Academy was created to help educate and empower citizens with information and resources that enhance their personal safety and crime prevention. This free academy is held once a month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of every month in the Golden Fire Department, except for the June class, which will be on Tuesday, June 12 in Council Chambers. Come do some Christmas Shopping at the Annual Golden High School Holiday Bazaar held by the PTA of Golden High. With one-of-a-kind gifts from over 90 different local artists, you can make a big dent on your holiday shopping list.

This is a fund raiser for the students at Golden High School, helping with scholarships, after prom party, grants, and more.

The Holiday Bazaar will be held at the Golden High School, 701 24th St, Golden on Saturday, December 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Includes free parking and admission.
