Background Checks / Clearance Letters

Background checks / Clearance letters are a notarized statement that identifies what a person’s history has been with a local law enforcement agency. Clearance letters/background checks only apply to the particular law enforcement agency that it is provided by.

If you live in the Denver Metro area, you are required to come in and request the clearance letter/background check in person by providing a photo identification and paying the applicable fees.

If you live outside the Denver Metro area, you may print a copy of the Clearance Letter Request Form pdf download, completely fill out the form (any form not completed will be returned), and mail the form along with the Applicable Fee pdf download to the Records Unit.

If you require a background check that identifies all arrests STATEWIDE, you must obtain this through the Colorado Bureau of Investigations in person at 690 Kipling Street, Lakewood, CO 80221 or through their website at www.cbirecordscheck.com.

If you require a background check that identifies all arrests NATIONWIDE you may obtain additional information through their website at www.fbi.gov.
