Special Use Permits

Every type of zoning has corresponding uses allowed by right in Chapter 18.28 of the Municipal Code, as well as Special Uses, which are appropriate upon site specific review according to the standards and procedures established in the Golden Municipal Code Chapter 18.30.020, and with formal approval by the City.

Special Use Permitting Process

  • Step 1: Applicant should first determine the Special Uses permitted for their zone district in Chapter 18.28.
  • Step 2: Applicant will set up a pre-submittal meeting with the Planning & Development Department to start the process, and set a date for a neighborhood meeting for residents and owners of property in the vicinity of the site to explain the request.  At the meeting, the applicant will have a chance to explain their intentions and address any concerns of neighbors.
  • Step 3: Applicant will submit an application and accompanying fee using the universal Development Application (available through our Online Permitting Portal), with a fee of $450 for most Special Use Permits.
  • Step 4: Applicant and City Staff will bring the Special Use case to the Planning Commission for a public hearing, where Planning Commission will either deny or approve the proposed Special Use Permit request.

Applicant can expect this process to take a minimum of 45 days.
